Bach ne put achever l’Art de la fugue avant sa mort. À l’endroit exact où s’interrompt la dernière fugue, C. Ph. E. Bach écrivit dans le manuscrit de son père: «Sur cette fugue, où le nom de B.A.C.H. forme le contre-sujet, est mort son auteur.» Notre éditeur Davitt Moroney l’a achevée en lui ajoutant 30 mesures finales.
La question de la formation instrumentale à laquelle était destinée cette œuvre a soulevé beaucoup de débats du fait que les parties individuelles ont été écrites sans que Bach donne d’indication pour leur exécution. Ces fugues rigoureuses peuvent assurément être jouées par n’importe quelle formation instrumentale. Il en a toujours été ainsi. Cependant, il apparaît clairement que le cycle peut être interprété en l’état au piano ou au clavecin sans qu’aucune modification n’ait besoin d’être entreprise à cet effet: un argument largement en faveur des instruments à clavier.
