Outre la grande cantate pour l’élection du conseil municipal de Mühlhausen (dite Ratswahl-kantate) et l’Offrande musicale, la collection Clavier-Übung fait partie des rares œuvres de Bach éditées de son vivant. Cette collection est constituée de quatre parties dont la première comprenant les six partitas parut en 1731 tandis que les parties II à IV parurent respectivement en 1735, 1739 et 1741/42. Les œuvres réunies dans le présent volume sont issues de ces der-nières.
Le concerto italien et l’Ouverture dans le style français constituent la deuxième partie et pro-posent une sorte d’imitation au clavier de la musique orchestrale française et italienne de l’époque. Les Quatre duos figurent dans la partie III de la Clavier-Übung aux côtés d’importantes œuvres pour orgue, mais leur écriture à deux voix convient parfaitement au pia-no ou au clavecin. Enfin, les Variations Goldberg constituaient la quatrième partie de la Cla-vier-Übung au moment de leur publication. Selon Forkel, premier biographe de Bach, un comte de Keyserlingk avait commandé à Bach de la musique dont son claveciniste Johann Gottlieb Goldberg devait pouvoir lui jouer des morceaux «doux et de caractère plutôt gai» pendant ses nuits d’insomnie. Commande dont ont résulté des chefs-d’œuvre de premier plano.
